This bar chart tracks the changes in spending in forest management from 1977 to 1992. The vertical axis lists the spending in millions of dollars from 0 to 3000 (that is, 3 billion), and the horizontal gives the year from 1977 to 1992. For each year there are four bars representing types of spending: silviculture, protection, resource access, and other. Overall, total spending on forest management has gone up substantially. In 1977, it totalled about $700 million, of which silviculture made up $120 million, protection was also about $120 million, resource access was $240 million, and other was $220 million. All four components increased over the years to 1991 when the values were as follows: total, $2.6 billion; silviculture, $800 million; protection, $450 million; resource access, $550 million; and other, $800 million. There was the first decline in the 1977-1992 period in 1992, when the data were as follows: total, $2.4 billion; silviculture, $700 million; protection, $400 million; resource access, $400 million; and other, $900 million.
