Youth (under 15 years), 1996
Abstract
The Aboriginal population in the north still exhibits what is termed a “young“ population. There are several regions in southern Canada that have a low proportion of youth. The small centres in the Prairies have lower proportions of youth than the surrounding rural area. Generally speaking, in areas with a large proportion of youth there are low proportions of elderly and vice versa.
This map represents the proportion of the population under 15 years of age. There are a number of general patterns apparent on this map. The north has a higher proportion of youth than the south. The Aboriginal population in the north still exhibits what is termed a "young" population (consult the population pyramids for the Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut). There are several regions in southern Canada that have a low proportion of youth. These tend to be in the agricultural regions of the country. Once the scale has been increased, notice the detailed pattern. The small centres in the Prairies have lower proportions of youth than the surrounding rural area.
When the youth map is compared to the map for the oldest old the patterns are, for the most part, reversed. Generally speaking, in areas with large proportions of youth there are low proportions of elderly and vice versa.
