Coral Harbour, Nunavut

Nunavut is a new beginning for the people of Coral Harbour. It is an opportunity to make the changes in government that can help make our community and our culture strong. It is a chance to show the world who we are and be a model for other aboriginal people.

Coral Harbour is a special place. It is alone on Southampton Island (about the size of Switzerland) but with only 721 people. Its name is derived from the fossilized coral found it the waters around the community, evidence of a island in front of the mainland. Coral Harbour has a beautiful little harbour which protects its many boats from the summer gales. The sea is frozen from November until July and is then travelled upon by snowmobile. There is much wildlife here including walrus, polar bears, caribou, seals and gyrfalcons. People use the animals for food and clothing and they are now trying to develop tourism. Coral Harbour is a bit difficult to get to, though. You must travel here by airplane by way of Winnipeg and Rankin Inlet. Most of our goods must also come by plane so we hope that the new government of Nunavut attempts to solve some of our transportation problems. Its name in Inuktitut is Salliq which translates as the flat.

The sun at Coral Harbour

In ten years Coral Harbour will probably have 1000 people because we have a very high birth rate (over 4%). To accomodate this we will need another school, a larger nursing station and lots more houses. We will have better air service so that lots of people can come and see our beautiful little hamlet.
