Student Worksheet – The Rivers and Lakes of Alberta

1. Open the Internet browser on your computer.

2. In the space next to the address bar, type this address: atlas.gc.ca Make sure you type in the address correctly, use lower case letters and no space.

3. Move your cursor over the words Reference Maps found on the left of the screen under Explore Our Maps. You will now see a pop-out menu. Carefully move the mouse down the menu to Provincial and Territorial (it turns a dark blue colour). Click on it. Click the Alberta Map link.

4. Well done. Now click on the link View this map as a JPEG.

5. Awesome! You have found and opened a map of Alberta to help you with your task.

6. Using the information from the map of Alberta on the computer, you will find the main rivers and lakes of Alberta. For each river and lake you will:

a. colour it blue with your pencil crayon on your outline map of Alberta
b. use your pencil to label its name on the outline map of Alberta

7. Find the South Saskatchewan River on the computer map. You may have to move up or down on the map to be able to find all of the rivers and lakes. To do this, you may:

a. use the arrow keys on the keyboard
b. use the scroll bar on the right side of the screen

[The map shows major rivers in both English and French. For example, the South Saskatchewan River is shown on top of the river and then below it as well. You will see R Saskatchewan Sud. The letter R is used for River and the letter L is used for Lake.]

8. Now find the same river on your outline map. Once you are certain that you have found the correct river on your outline map, trace over it with your blue pencil crayon.

9. Use your pencil to neatly print the name of the river next to the river on your outline map.

10. Do the same for each river and lake on the list. Use a check mark in the box next to the name, to show which ones you have found and have coloured and labelled them on your outline map of Alberta.
