Assign each student or group a province
or territory in Canada and provide them with an outline
map of the area.
Have students go to the Atlas of Canada Web site
located at: atlas.gc.ca and
click on the English button.
Students should complete the following steps calling
on the teacher for help as needed.
1. In the Explore Our Maps menu on the left side
of the page:
a. click on Economy
b. then Resource Reliant Communities, 1996
c. select the Forest Reliant Communities, 1996 Map
d. click on the Get Info from Map button and then on the assigned province/territory
e. write the name of one community given
2. In the Explore Our Maps menu on the left side of the page:
a. click on Economy
b. then Resource Reliant Communities, 1996
c. select the Mineral Reliant Communities, 1996 Map
d. click on the Get Info from Map button and then on the assigned province/territory
e. write the name of one community given
3. In the Explore Our Maps menu on the left side of the page:
a. click on Reference Maps
b. choose Provincial and Territorial Outline
c. click on your assigned provincial or territorial map
d. view the map as a JPEG or PDF
e. find the community/region on the map from questions 1 and 2
f. mark the location of the community/region on the print copy of your outline map
g. describe its relative location
4. On the Atlas of Canada home page:
a. click on Advanced Search
b. select the Search for the
location of a place on a map option
c. type in the name of the communities you found
in question 1
d. select Province/Territory then click the arrow image
e. give the absolute location of the community
f. mark this on the print copy of your outline map
g. click the name of your community and look at the relative
location of the community
h. add to your description of the community’s relative location begun in number
3
5. On the Atlas of Canada home page:
a. click on Advanced Search
b. select the Search for the
location of a place on a map option
c. type in the name of the communities you found in question 2
d. select Province/Territory then click the arrow image
e. give the absolute location of the community
f. mark this on the print copy of your outline map
g. click the name of your community and look at the relative
location of the community
h. add to your description of the community’s relative location begun in number 3
6. On the Atlas of Canada home page:
a. go to the Learning Resources section
and select the Quizzes link
b. choose Economy
c. select the level of difficulty to Easy, the number of questions to
10 and time to 5
d. complete the quiz and record score
e. return to Quizzes
f. change level of difficulty to Difficult, number of questions to 20 and time to 10
g. complete the quiz
h. compare scores from both quizzes
