1. Show the blank Nunavut outline map on an overhead projector
and ask students to point to their home community.
2. Add dots to the map showing
community locations but
no names.
3. Gradually add
place locations for all
of Nunavut communities.
4. A second acetate with the
place names already printed
out could be placed on
top of the original acetate at the end
of the student guess.
5. If possible write out names
in both English and Inuktitut.
6. After all communities are
located on the map, hand
out a blank Nunavut map to each student
and give them class time
to label the communities.
- Students should next label their own maps at their desks.
7. Direct students to the Atlas of Canada Web site at atlas.gc.ca
a. Ask students to write out the name of 4 communities on the back of their map.
b. Students are to also write out 2 pieces of new information they learned about each of those communities from the Atlas Web site.
8. Ask them to select Learning Resources » Facts About Canada » Nunavut
Communities, 1999
9. Explain to the students that clicking on a community name shows more textual and pictorial details for that community. Ask students to click on:
a. their own community
b. the next closest community from their home
c. the community farthest away from their own community
d. one other Nunavut community of their choice
10. Scramble the spellings of the community names on flash cards and hold the cards up one at a time to see who can guess the community name first. Show the correct spellings on the back. Keep for later.
- Students review the place names by unscrambling the words.
