1. Go to the Atlas of Canada Web site located at atlas.gc.ca and
click on the English button.
2. Move the cursor to the left of the screen under the
Atlas of Canada symbol. In the Explore Our
Maps section,
notice that the cursor turns into a hand as you move
your pointer down and gives a list of map topics.
3. Stop at the Reference Maps section
and then move to the right to Canada and
click with your mouse.
4. In the new page that appears, find the link to the Political
Divisions (interactive) Map and click.
5. A coloured
map of Canada will appear. As you move your cursor
on this map you will see that it changes to a hand.
When you click it, it will cause the map to zoom
in. Notice there are other options at the top of
the map. On the right side of the map you will find
the legend. This tells what the different symbols that
are used on the map represent.
Answer the following questions about this map
a. What is the symbol for provincial boundaries?
b. What is the symbol for international boundaries?
c. What is the symbol for Canada’s national capital?
d. What is the symbol for the provincial capitals?
e. What happens when you click on the arrows on the sides, top and bottom of the map?

2. Have a fellow student check you work for accuracy.
3. Colour your map similar to the online Atlas
of Canada Political
Divisions (interactive) Map.
What Maps Need
1. Your name in the top right hand corner.
2. All labels must be printed neatly in pencil.
3. Map title to be printed at the top centre
of the page and underlined.
4. All labels must be horizontal. Use a ruler
to help keep words straight.
5. Do not colour entire oceans blue. A thin
blue border is all that is needed.
6. Include a legend to describe the symbols
used.
7. Include a simple compass rose with cardinal
directions.
8. Colouring is to be done in pencil crayon
using light shading. (no markers)
9. Add a scale bar. |
