Student Worksheet – A Study in Economic Diversity

Background Information

Economic activity can be broken down into three main sectors:

  • Primary Industries are those that involve the extraction of natural resources, including agriculture.
Examples: mining, forestry, oil and gas, agriculture, fishing, hunting
  • Secondary Industries are those that involve the processing of raw materials and the manufacturing of products using natural resources.
Examples: iron and steel mill, auto parts plant, furniture manufacturer
  • Tertiary Industries are those that involve the provision of services and include the distribution of final products to the market.
    Examples: banking, education, retail

Tasks

1. Go to the Atlas of Canada Web site at atlas.gc.ca and following the steps outlined below, Explore Our Maps » Economy » Resource-Reliant Communities, 1996 » Energy-Reliant Communities, 1996 Map.

2. Fill in the Resource-Reliance Comparison Chart by completing the following steps:

a. Before gathering data from the map, click on the Read more about this map link located in the small text box on the map or at the end of the abstract. Write in the definition for Energy-Reliant Community on the chart. Return to the map window using the Back button in your browser.

b. Zoom In on the province of Alberta and determine the number of communities for each of the three reliance percentage classes and record them on the chart. Also note and record the dominant location for energy-reliant communities within the province: for example, north, south and central.

c. Click on the arrow on the right hand border of the Alberta map to display the province of Saskatchewan.

d. Using the Back button in your browser, return to the Resource-Reliant Communities, 1996 description page and select the links for the Mineral-Reliant Communities and Forest-Reliant Communities for both Alberta and Saskatchewan and complete the same process.

3. Using the information you recorded in the comparison chart, write two statements to compare the resource-reliance of communities in the two provinces. One statement must compare the distribution of resource-reliant communities (where are they located?) and the other must compare the level of reliance on a certain resource.

5. The last step in our analysis of economic diversity is to look at the effect an economy has on population patterns. Use the Population Density, 1999 Map by doing the following: select Explore Our Maps » People & Society » Population » Population Density, 1996 Map. Then Zoom In on the Alberta and Saskatchewan region.
