Lesson Description – Canada’s International Connections

This lesson gives students an overview of Canada’s international associations using the maps found on the on-line Atlas of Canada Web site as a research resource.

Main Objective

Students will use the online Atlas of Canada to successfully conduct background research on Canada’s international connections.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

  • access and use the Atlas of Canada Web site to research Canada’s international connections
  • locate and describe Canada’s global position
  • understand the importance of Canada’s global position and the diversity of its connections to other regions of the World

Lesson Outline

Introduction

Teacher Activity

  • Hand out student worksheet 1.
  • Introduce the Atlas of Canada as the research information source students will use to find geographic information about Canada’s international connections.

  • Complete worksheet 1.

  • Review the importance of carefully following instructions and help students access the Web site.

Lesson Extension

Student can be assigned to a group and will study one of Canada’s international associations in more detail. They will be expected to make a presentation to the class which must include a map from the Atlas of Canada’s series of international reference maps.
