Lesson Description – Exploring Canadian Heritage

This lesson introduces students to the online Atlas of Canada as a research tool while investigating information about national parks and world heritage sites. Students will make connections between the ancient cultures that once lived in these areas and their environment.

Grades 6 to 8 (This lesson could be modified for Social Studies 9. It is also appropriate for the Grade 9 Geography of Canada course in Ontario.)

Time Required

Approximately 30 minutes for the introductory material and 60 minutes to use the online atlas. Extra time may be required to complete the written component.

Main Objective

The goal of this lesson is for students to successfully use the online Atlas as a research tool to investigate information regarding national parks and world heritage sites.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • access and use the Atlas of Canada Web site as a research tool
  • locate specific world heritage sites and national Parks in Canada (using absolute and relative location)
  • find data about specific parks in Canada using the Facts about Canada, Explore Our Maps and Advanced Search sections of the Web site
  • organize and compare the data collected
  • identify characteristics which made these parks suitable for settlement by ancient cultures
  • evaluate how ancient cultures in Canada were influenced by the environment

  • option B : distribute background information to students, read together and discuss
