Student Worksheet – Exploring Canadian Heritage

Before You Begin

Make sure you have the Canadian Heritage Organizer with you so you can complete it as you work through the activity below. You will also be answering questions on this worksheet.

Section A: World Heritage Sites

1. In this section you will:

a. find out some general information about world heritage sites in Canada

b. locate and collect data about L’Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland and Labrador

2. Go to the Atlas of Canada Web site located at atlas.gc.ca and click on the English language button.

a. mouse over the Environment topic in the Explore Our Maps section in the left-hand side of the page
b. click on Land
c. in the page that appears, click the link to the World Heritage Sites Map

3. Answer the following questions using the World Heritage Sites Map.

a. Describe what a world heritage site is. (To find this click on the Read more about this map link located in the small text box on the map or at the end of the abstract.) Write your answer in the space below.

b. How many world heritage sites are there in Canada? (You can zoom in and count them or select Read more about this map. To zoom in, click on the Zoom In button and then on the area of the map you want to see.) Write your answer in the space below.

c. In your Canadian Heritage Organizer, record the area (in square kilometres) and the year that L’Anse Aux Meadows was designated a world heritage site. (Click on the Get Info from Map button click on L’Anse Aux Meadows on the map.)

Section B: National Parks

1. In this section you will locate three National Parks.

a. mouse over the Reference Maps topic in the Explore Our Maps section
b. click on the Canada category
c. in the page that appears click on the link to the National Parks Map (ask your teacher whether you should view this map as a JPEG or PDF file)

2. Locate the three National Parks below and name the province or territory where they are located.

a. Kluane National Park:

3. Now we will find the area (in square kilometres) and year of designation for each park. Record this information in your Canadian Heritage Organizer.

a. in the Learning Resources section of the menu on the left side of the page, click on Facts About Canada
b. find and click the link to National Parks in the List of Facts
c. record the area and year of designation for each of the parks above in your Canadian Heritage Organizer

Section C: Making Connections Between Ancient Lands and Cultures

1. In this section you will examine the locational and physical characteristics of each park.

a. click the link to the Advanced Search from the left-hand side on your screen
b. select the Search for the location of a place on a map option
c. type L’Anse aux Meadows in the search box
d. click the arrow symbol
e. you should see a list of search results appear and choose the one that says L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site and click the link to it

2. In your organizer, describe the absolute and relative location of L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site.
(Hint: examples of absolute location are latitude, longitude and province; examples of relative location are closest town, nearby landmarks or bodies of water)

3. Now describe some of the physical characteristics of this site in your organizer.

4. Repeat the steps to complete the same information for Kluane, Gwaii Haanas and Pukaskwa National Parks.
