Bar Chart of Change in Number of Dairy Cows per Farm

This bar chart shows the trend in the number of cows per farm. The horizontal axis displays the number of dairy cows reported, broken into four groupings: 1 to 24, 25 to 49, 50 to 99, and 100 and over. For each group there are three bars, showing the values of 1976, 1986, and 1996. The vertical axis shows the percentage of total farms reporting dairy cows, with values ranging from 0 to 70. The following values are approximate. In 1976, 64% of the farms had 1 to 24 cows; this dropped to 46% by 1986, and to 29% by 1996. For the 25 to 49 cows group, 27% of farms were in this range in 1976, a percentage which increased to 38% in 1986, and to 44% in 1996. In 1976, 8% of farms had between 50 and 99 cows; this rose to 14% in 1986, and up to 23% in 1996. The final group of 100 cows and over saw 1% of farms in 1976, 2% in 1986 and, 5% in 1996.
