Map Sources
The Atlas maps are composed of several layers of which there are two broad categories: thematic and base layers. Find below a description of each of the map layers. The layer source is included in the metadata.
Thematic Map Layers
- Seasonal Severity Ratings for Forest Fires, 1980-1989
- Shown are the seasonal severity ratings of forest fire between 1980 and 1989 under the reference level of atmospheric carbon dioxide (1xCO2). Climate simulations, which were generated from four Global General Circulation Models, were used to project forest fire danger levels with relation to global warming. Global Climate Models (also called general circulation models) or GCMs provide quantitative estimates of potential climate change by "modelling" the physical climate system. The Seasonal Severity Rating (SSR) is a measure of fire danger conditions over a complete fire season. Canadian Forest Service, Natural Resources Canada, 2001.
- Seasonal Severity Ratings for Forest Fires, 2050-2059
- Shown are the projected seasonal severity ratings of forest fire between 2050 and 2059 with a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide (2xCO2).
- Seasonal Severity Ratings for Forest Fires, 2090-2099
- Shown are the projected seasonal severity ratings of forest fire between 2090 and 2099 with a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide (3xCO2).
Base Map Layers
- Atlas of Canada Framework Layers
- Base map components are features that provide a geographic
context for the thematic data shown on Atlas of Canada maps.
These features include rivers, lakes, administrative boundaries,
populated places, roads and rail lines. All of the Atlas of
Canada base map components are available for immediate free
download in five scales and in a number of data exchange formats.
The 1:7 500 000 and the 1:1 000 000 scale data are the primary base
frameworks used for all Atlas of Canada 6th Edition online
maps. You can download Atlas of Canada data from this Web
page on GeoGratis.
