The Hudson Region forms the main central depression on the surface of the Shield. One of its subregions, the Hudson Bay Lowland, is a low, swampy plain with subdued glacial features and a belt of raised beaches that border the bay. The Hudson Region comprises Hudson Bay Lowland, Hudson Bay itself, the Southampton Plain, the Belcher Islands and the Richmond Hills.
