Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories
This photograph, taken near Tuktoyaktuk in the Northwest Territories, shows two pingos, which are ice-cored mounds covered by soil. Pingos occur in permafrost terrain and are common in this area. These features along the coast are about 40 metres in height and protrude above a flat landscape lying between low uplands and the sea.
