Diagram of the Hydrologic Cycle

This illustration shows the hydrologic cycle in which water leaves the atmosphere by falling to the earth as precipitation, then ultimately returns to the atmosphere. Rainfall on the ground either enters surface waters or it percolates into the water table and groundwater. In most cases, the water from rain is ultimately taken back into the atmosphere by transpiration and evaporation to begin the cycle again.
