Audio Transcript: Concerned over a drop in the beaver trade and rumours of French traders among the Oneida, the Dutch West India Company sent a three man expedition up the Mohawk Valley to Lake Oneida. The men departed Fort Orange (present-day Albany) on 11 December and reached an Oneida village on the 30th. On 12 January, they returned, reaching Fort Orange on the 21st. As far as is known this was the first non-French expedition towards the Great Lakes.
