Audio Transcript of Jean de Brébeuf and Pierre-Joseph-Marie Chaumonot (France; for France) 1640 to 1641

Audio Transcript: In the autumn of 1640 the Jesuits decided to open a mission to the Neutral. Fathers Brebeuf and Chaumonot departed from Sainte-Marie among the Huron (near present-day Midland, Ontario) on 2 November 1640 and on the fifth day of their journey reached the Neutral. During the next four months, the two Jesuits travelled widely between the Neutral villages, perhaps as far as the Niagara River. They were back at Sainte-Marie on 19 March 1641. On their return journey they spent two days crossing a frozen lake (probably Lake Simcoe). Their journey added considerably to earlier knowledge of southwestern Ontario.
