Audio Transcript: In September 1641, the Jesuits Jogues and Raymbaut were invited by the Saulteaux (Ojibwa) of Sault Ste. Marie to visit and establish a mission among them. The two departed from Sainte-Marie in the Huron country (near present-day Midland, Ontario) and reached the Sault after seventeen days of travel. This visit resulted in the first brief description of the Aboriginal peoples of the area and other groups further west. Although the fathers did not see Lake Superior, they were told of its existence.
