Audio Transcript of Simon le Moyne (French) 1654

Audio Transcript: On 2 July 1654 Father le Moyne travelled from Montréal into Iroquois territory (as an ambassador of peace) along the southern shore of Lake Ontario as far as present-day Syracuse, New York, where he found the existence of a salt water spring. On 16 August, he wrote: “We arrive at the entrance to a little lake in a great basin that is half dried up, and taste the water from a spring … upon tasting it I find it to be a spring of salt water; and indeed we made some salt from it, as natural as that which comes from the sea, and are carrying a sample of it to Québec.” Father le Moyne and his companion arrived back in Québec 11 September 1654 promising to return in 1655 to the tribal territory of the Onondagas which he had just explored.
