Audio Transcript of Médard Chouart des Groseilliers and Pierre-Esprit Radisson 1659 to 1660

Audio Transcript: In August 1659, Des Groseilliers and Radisson travelled to the western end of Lake Superior and explored the wilderness south and west of the great lake. From Lake Superior, the two men pressed further into the interior and spent the winter with the Huron and Ottawa probably near present-day Mille Lac. Here they became acquainted with the Sioux, (probably the first white men to have contact with them).

During the winter at the great "Feast of the Dead" to which "eighteen severall nations" came, the explorers gained much of their knowledge of the geography of the surrounding country, lying between their camp and Hudson Bay and the great "store of beaver" there and to the west. In the following summer, the pair returned to Montréal 20 August 1660 via Lake Superior.
