Audio Transcript: In the period 1668-69, Gillam the captain of the famed 43-ton Nonsuch, was funded by a group of English courtiers, gentlemen and financiers called the “Adventurers” to explore the Arctic region of North America. Des Groseilliers, sailing with Gillam in the Nonsuch, found his way into the “Sea of the North” [Hudson Bay] and anchored at the mouth of river which the Englishmen named Rupert. Here they built a house called Charles Fort where they spent the winter. Later this fort became Rupert House, a fur trading post. In the spring they traded with the local Aboriginal peoples and returned to London in 1669 with a fine cargo of beaver pelts.
