Audio Transcript: On 17 May 1673, Louis Jolliet, accompanied by Father Marquette, was chosen to lead an expedition in search of the upper reaches of the Mississippi River. Leaving Saint Ignace (now in Michigan), they crossed Lake Michigan, ascended the Fox River, then descended the Wisconsin River to the Mississippi River which they reached on 17 June 1673. The party traversed the Mississippi River southward until a point below the mouth of the Arkansas River before turning back to Saint Ignace.
