Audio Transcript of Charles Bayly 1674

Audio Transcript: In the summer of 1674, Bayly voyaged to Moose River, where he entered into trade with the local Aboriginal peoples. On 21 July, he sailed northwards to Cape Henrietta Maria, passing the island now known as Akimiski Island. At Ekwan River and at New Severn he observed signs of starvation among the Aboriginal peoples, from whom he learned that the sea beyond Cape Henrietta Maria was full of ice. Subsequently, Bayly decided to return to Rupert River. The return voyage was interrupted briefly by a delay on Charlton Island, which delayed their arrival at Rupert River until 30 August.
