Audio Transcript: On 1 September 1678, Dulhut and seven French companions departed from Montréal for Lake Superior, to “make peace with all the other nations around Lake Superior, who all live under the rule of our invincible monarch.” Over the winter, they camped at the eastern end of the lake, just past the rapids of Sault Sainte-Marie. In the summer of 1679 they explored the various Sioux villages spread around Lake Baude (Mille-Lacs Lake) near present-day Duluth.
