Audio Transcript of René-Robert Cavelier de la Salle 1679


Audio Transcript: In August 1679 after several days, La Salle, departed from the Niagara River in the Griffon, accompanied by 30 men, to reconnoitre the land between New France, Florida and Mexico. He sailed for twenty days along Lakes Erie, Huron and Michigan, and went ashore at the Saint-Ignace de Michilmackinac mission. On 12 September, he sailed for Baie des Puants (now Green Bay), and set forth 19 September with 14 men in 4 canoes towards the south of Lake Michigan and stopped at the mouth of the Rivière Saint-Joseph (present-day St. Joseph River, MI). On 3 December they travelled up this river and crossed the Téatiki (Kankakee) to reach the Illinois River.
