Audio Transcript of Michel Accault, Antoine Auguel dit Le Picard du Guay and Louis Hennepin 1680

Audio Transcript: At Fort Crèvecoeur, built in January 1680, workers and coureurs des bois had deserted and food was scarce. While La Salle decided to return to Niagara, Hennepin refused and decided “in this extreme situation, we both took a decision that was both extraordinary and difficult, myself to head out with two men into unknown territory.” Accompanied by two coureurs des bois, Accault, Auguel and Hennepin, between 29 February and 10 March travelled down the Illinois River until they reached the Mississippi River, and then they travelled north until they passed present-day Minneapolis, where a waterfall was named St. Anthony Falls. Here they advanced towards the north and west of Lake Superior, and reached Lac des Issatis (Leech Lake), near the source of the Mississippi River. On 11 April 1680, while on their return journey back to Fort Crèvecoeur they were captured by the Sioux.
