Audio Transcript: In the period 1739 to 1740, Louis Joseph de La Vérendrye, the youngest son of Pierre Gaultier de La Vérendrye, explored north into Lake Winnipeg and then up the Saskatchewan River until he reached the Forks of the Saskatchewan, “a great crossroads of the northern fur trade, the rendezvous every spring of the Crees of the Mountains, Prairies and Rivers to deliberate as to what they shall do, go and trade with the French or with the English.”
