Audio Transcript: On 9 April 1742, Louis-Joseph and François de La Vérendrye left Fort La Reine, with orders (from their father) to travel as far as possible to the west. By 1 January 1743, they had ascended the Upper Missouri as far as the Yellowstone River. They continued to travel west until they reached in February 1743 the foot of the Rocky Mountains (in present-day Wyoming).
