Audio Transcript: With instructions from the Hudson’s Bay Company to explore the East Main (the east shore of Hudson Bay and James Bay), Mitchell in the Eastmain, and Longland in the Phoenix set sail in the summer of 1744 from Moose Factory. They explored 500 miles of coastline, and mapped the mouths of the Big River (Fort George River), Great Whale River and Little Whale River, and travelled as far north as Richmond Gulf at 56° N.
