Historical Background: After William Claus had completed the Lake Simcoe-Nottawasga Purchase, he began negotiations with the Mississaugas of Credit River for 648 000 acres of land to the south. Ajetance, Chief of the Credit River, agreed to the surrender of the land, except for three reserves at the mouth of the Credit River, in return for goods to the value of 522 pounds, 10 shillings annually.
