Audio Transcript of Pierre Joseph Céloron and Joseph-Pierre de Bonnécamps 1749

Audio Transcript: On 15 June 1749, Céloron and Bonnécamps departed Montréal with 213 regular soldiers, militia and a few Aboriginal guides, with orders to assert French claims to the region of the Ohio valley and to drive out the English traders. They travelled by way of the Niagara along the south shore of Lake Erie, to the Chatacouin portage (near present-day Westfield, New York), and then crossed overland to go south down the Allegheny River and eventually into the Ohio River. Upon reaching the mouth of Rivière à la Roche [Great Miami River, OH], they turned north and started their return journey to Montreal, which they reached 9 November.
