This map is one of the first satellite image maps to combine imagery and other map components such as boundaries and place names. The imagery is a composite of 45 images from the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) satellites. The imagery was captured between August 11 to 20, 1990 to obtain cloud-free coverage of all of Canada. A smaller scale series of regional maps for all of Canada was planned but only the satellite image map of Ontario was produced.
