Abstract

Endemic plants are those plants found only in Canada. The concentration of these species is in areas that possess unique characteristics such as the central Yukon, the Athabasca sand dunes, and the isolated Queen Charlotte Islands. These plants have genetically adapted to these particular environmental conditions.

Nationally endemic plants are those plants found only in Canada. Because these are found nowhere else, Canada has a special obligation to ensure these plants do not become extinct. Note how the concentration of these species is associated with areas such as the unglaciated Yukon, the unusual Athabasca sand dunes and the isolated Queen Charlotte Islands - areas possessing unique characteristics where these plants have genetically adapted to these particular environmental conditions.
