Audio Transcript: Due to increased pressure from French traders in the western interior, the Hudson’s Bay Company, ordered more exploration of the region to the west of Hudson Bay. In 1756, Smith and Waggoner received orders to accompany Washiabitt, a Cree chief, back to his home grounds near Sturgeon Lake. On 23 August, the two “Josephs” and their guide left York Fort, travelling via the Hayes and Fox rivers to Cross Lake and ascended the Nelson to Little Playgreen Lake and Lac Ouinipigon (Lake Winnipeg) and onto Lac Bourbon (Cedar Lake), which they reached on 31 October. From here, they drifted south hunting buffalo passing the Porcupine Hills and Duck Mountain, crossing the Assiniboine River and entering into what is now southwestern Manitoba and southeastern Saskatchewan. In March 1757, the party returned to York Fort.
