Abstract

This map shows the locations of more than 1000 museums that are members of the Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN), a Special Operating Agency of the Canadian Heritage Department. The CHIN members directly create and update their entries residing in the ‘Find a Museum’ section of the Virtual Museum of Canada.

There are more than 2400 museums in Canada, ranging from internationally admired giants to small gems that owe their existence to the passionate dedication of volunteers. These heritage destinations include art galleries, natural science museums, gardens, aquariums, archives, planetariums, zoos, historic sites and more.

This Atlas map links to the museum information residing in the ‘Find a Museum’ section of the Virtual Museum of Canada (VMC). The VMC is the result of a partnership between the vast community of museums in Canada and the Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN). More than 1000 CHIN member museums directly create and update their entries in this resource. The VMC site is bilingual; however, content contributed by member museums is sometimes available only in the working language of that institution.

Each museum symbol on the map has a Web link to the Virtual Museum of Canada’s description of the collections, along with practical details on services and activities, operating hours and admission fees. Street-level interactive maps showing the museums’ locations are also included.
