Migratory Bird Sanctuaries are areas set aside by the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) of Environment Canada to protect migratory birds. The sanctuaries include a range of habitat types, such as terrestrial, wetland and marine.
The Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) of Environment Canada establishes bird sanctuaries to control and manage areas of importance for the protection of migratory birds, their nests and eggs. The sanctuaries consist of various types of habitat, such as terrestrial, wetland or marine. The CWS makes regulations regarding the activities that can be carried out within these areas. Wildlife conservation is the primary purpose of Environment Canada’s protected areas, but most sites permit public access and some offer visitor facilities and services.
For example, in the Ile Bonaventure et du Rocher Percé Migratory Bird Sanctuary, there are boat tours to the island and hiking trails to observe the impressive colonies of Northern Gannet. The Black-legged Kittiwake, the Razorbill, and the Great Cormorant are other birds to observe in this area.
