Health Behaviours

At the present time it is difficult to acquire reliable data to illustrate sub-provincial health behaviour patterns for all of Canada. This topic, therefore, shows two selected categories of health behaviours using maps of Canada with provincial boundaries only.

The two indicators that have been selected for discussion present an interesting contrast. When one engages in one of the behaviours (smoking) health tends to deteriorate; while engaging in the other (physical activity) can improve one's health.

List of Health Behaviours Topics:

The data used are drawn primarily from the Statistical Report on the Health of Canadians (1999) which, in turn, used a significant amount of information derived from the National Population Health Survey (primarily cycle 2 of NPHS, 1996 to 1997). Excluded from the NPHS dataset employed here were persons living in the territories, on Indian Reserves or on Canadian Forces bases, and people living in some remote areas of Canada.
